Congratulations to Dr. Mehmet Uvey!
Congratulations to Mehmet, our Laboratory Manager at Aviagen Anadolu for recently completing a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology.
Mehmet decided to pursue his PhD due to his interest in learning more about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as this is becoming a major topic worldwide, and its use has recently been under scrutiny. Within his role as Laboratory Manager, Mehmet monitors the use of and advises on the usage of antimicrobials on our farms.
AMR has become a focus of his research, with a particular concentration on Salmonella and its sensitivity to a group of antimicrobials called Colistin (Polymyxins). The doctorate in Kirikkale University is a 5-year postgraduate program of which 3 years are classes you have to take on the recent developments in veterinary medicine, molecular biology, immunology and microbiology. You are then required to take an oral and written competency exam. Once you pass this, you are eligible to choose your own scientific work to create your dissemination. Mehmet’s study is called “Detection of Colistin resistance from the Salmonella strains isolated from the environmental samples taken from the poultry production farms in Turkey”. It aims to reveal the presence of the phenotypic and genotypic resistance to Colistin for the first time in Turkey from the Salmonella strains isolated from the environmental swab samples from the poultry-housing environment.

Congratulations once again
Dr. Mehmet!
